Laurent at Café Royal
A new culinary era for Hotel Café Royal
This May sees the opening of our brand new Grill & Sushi Bar, Laurent at Café Royal by internationally renowned chef Laurent Tourondel. Following previous residences by world-class chefs including Albert Adria, the Roca brothers, Paco Roncero and others, we are excited to announce chef Tourondel will hold court on the redesigned first floor of Hotel Café Royal permanently.
Our new restaurant marks a return to London for French-born Laurent Tourondel, and the first time he has opened a venue in Europe. With restaurants across the globe, Laurent is best known in America where he has restaurants in New York, Miami and Charlotte in North Carolina. Further afield he owns restaurants in Hong Kong, Kazakhstan and the Caribbean. Laurent cut his teeth training in France before moving to London, where he spent time in the kitchen at Boodles. A truly international chef, he has spent years working in cities such as Moscow and New York, and travelling through South America, Asia and Africa to hone his craft and bring a truly international menu to Hotel Café Royal.
International influences are evident across the new menu where Laurent has combined his experiences to open a restaurant unlike anything he has done before. An open kitchen and grill will offer the finest grilled meat and fish, most of which are sourced here in the UK; whilst our brand new sushi masters will prepare the hotels first ever sushi, sashimi and raw fish offering from the sushi bar. The restaurant will be open all day, offering breakfast, lunch and dinner. A new cocktail bar champions creative and innovative mixology and will remain open late into the night.
Designed by contemporary Italian architect and designer Piero Lissoni (the mastermind behind our stunning sister hotel Conservatorium in Amsterdam), the 110 seat restaurant is located on the first floor of Hotel Café Royal, where an extensive refurbishment has created an entirely new space. Lissoni’s previous global projects are varied and extend to yachts, residential properties and luxury hotels. Working closely with the hotel team, Lissoni has transformed not only the restaurant space but the main entrance to the hotel as well. The transformation of these historical spaces, part of the original Café Royal built in 1926, is a sensitive yet striking one, a hallmark of Lissoni’s work. Diners arriving through the Air Street entrance will experience a grand double height lobby featuring a Murano glass chandelier made by the legendary Italian glassmaker Vistosi which can be viewed from the main restaurant. The restaurant features different areas including booths and views of elegant Regent Street and the grand new lobby. In addition guests will enjoy a sushi bar, open kitchen and new cocktail bar creating an informal yet sophisticated atmosphere.
Heading up the restaurant team as General Manager is Dinos Tagkalos, who previously successfully launched the Henrietta Hotel in Covent Garden where he was responsible for the restaurant and bar operation. At the helm of the wine programme is Head Sommelier Sam Heathcote (pictured) who joins the team from the Bulgari Hotel and previously The Clove Club and Alain Ducasse’s 3 Michelin star restaurant at the Dorchester hotel. Fabio Spinetti joins as the new Bars & Beverage Manager from the Connaught, who will oversee the cocktail list at the new restaurant and throughout the hotels other restaurants and bars including the Green Bar, Papillon and afternoon tea in the historic Oscar Wilde Lounge.
