The Cultural Season London Has Been Waiting For

Autumn is a season of major exhibitions, landmark performances and the kind of cultural cross-pollination London does better than any other city: from the return of the Bayeux Tapestry after almost 1,000 years to a celebration of the 1990s curated by Edward Enninful, and from Cate Blanchett treading the boards to the enduring allure of the Burberry trench. Electra/Persona at the National Theatre

Cate Blanchett and Nina Hoss –who played her long-suffering wife in Tar— reunite on stage in Benedict Andrews’ ambitious new production, which brings together Sophocles’ ancient tragedy Electra with Ingmar Bergman’s psychological drama Persona. Blanchett plays an actress who falls silent during a performance of Electra, setting off an intense encounter between two women in which identity, performance and reality begin to unravel. It’s theatre at its most cinematic and psychologically charged.

The Bayeux Tapestry at the British Museum

One of the world’s most celebrated medieval artefacts returns to England almost 1,000 years later. Stretching approximately 70 metres, the Bayeux Tapestry tells the story of the Norman Conquest and the events surrounding the Battle of Hastings in 1066, while offering an extraordinary glimpse into the times of William the Conqueror, from sailing and warfare to clothing and food. Its arrival at the British Museum is a rare example of history observed and recorded at a monumental scale.

The 90s: Art and Fashion at Tate Britain

The decade that gave London Britpop, the Young British Artists, Alexander McQueen and a new visual language is curated by former British Vogue editor Edward Enninful for Tate Britain. Spanning art, fashion, photography, music and design, the exhibition brings together figures including Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin, Vivienne Westwood and Juergen Teller. More than nostalgia, it is a portrait of a decade when the boundaries between high art, popular culture and fashion began to dissolve—and London became the epicentre of cool, the world over.

Tim Walker’s Fairyland: Love and Legends at the National Portrait Gallery

Few photographers have imaginations quite like Tim Walker. His new exhibition features Walker’s signature combination of fantasy, theatricality and exquisite portraiture, creating a world somewhere between fairy tale and fashion editorial. At the National Portrait Gallery he will explore queer identity, community and love through more than 250 specially created portraits, bringing together artists, performers, writers and cultural figures including Ian McKellen and Chappell Roan.

Renoir and Love at the National Gallery

This major celebration of Pierre-Auguste Renoir explores the artist’s fascination with love, seduction, friendship and social life across more than 40 paintings. The exhibition includes Bal du Moulin de la Galette, one of the great paintings of modern Parisian life, which will be shown in the UK for the first time. Across café interiors, theatres, dance halls and domestic scenes, Renoir captures a world intoxicated by pleasure and human connection.

The Burberry Trench: Crafting an Icon at the V&A

Few garments are as synonymous with British style as the Burberry trench coat. Opening as the house celebrates its 170th anniversary, this exhibition traces the garment from its origins in military outerwear to its transformation into one of fashion’s most recognisable icons. Drawn from Burberry’s archive, the exhibition brings together historic examples, rare pieces and contemporary interpretations, offering a close-up look at the craftsmanship and mythology behind a coat that has never gone out of fashion.

London Design Festival

For nine days in September, London becomes a living showcase for design, with this year’s festival bringing showrooms, galleries and creative spaces together across the capital. The headline installation is The Pangolin Shield by Studio Saar and Atelier One on the Strand: a sculptural pavilion constructed from a bamboo grid shell layered with traditional Indian police shields and woven rain shields, transforming symbols of protection and power into a space for shelter and dialogue. Over in Shoreditch, the new Shoreditch Design Week brings together emerging designers, new materials and interior innovation across more than 60 creative spaces, while elsewhere the programme ranges from MADE’s new interiors collection at the Barbican to NIGO: From Japan with Love at the Design Museum and More is More: The Magical World of Peter Chang at Lyon & Turnbull. With 11 design districts spanning Mayfair, Chelsea, Bankside, Soho and beyond, it is the perfect moment to see how London is imagining the way we will live next.
